Phishers lurking behind fake webpages to steal data and money

KUALA LUMPUR: Syndicates behind online phishing scams are sending out mass e-mails, numbering up to hundreds of thousands or even millions, to the inboxes of unsuspecting victims.

Federal Commercial Crime Investigations Department director Commissioner Datuk Syed Ismail Syed Azizan said these e-mails were purportedly from banks and had the banks’ logos, making victims believe they were indeed sent by financial institutions.

He said hundreds of Malaysians, including professionals, had fallen prey to these syndicates.

The Starprobe team can now reveal the modus operandi of a syndicate.
