On 15th May 2014, The Communications and Multimedia Consumer Forum of Malaysia (CFM) successfully held a Forum themed ‘Broadband Landscape: Consumer’s Perspective’. The event was held at the Le Meridien, KL Sentral and was officiated by the representative from the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia, YBhg Dato’ Che Azemi Haron, Deputy Secretary General II.

The Forum discussed the broadband landscape in Malaysia in accordance with this year’s WTISD theme ‘Broadband for Sustainable Development’ and to point out the important issues faced by the consumers in the telecommunications and multimedia industry. This event was attended by more than 100 attendees from the supply side (service providers), demand side (consumer associations) and members of the general public.

The event started off with the keynote address by CFM Chairman, Dr. Elistina Abu Bakar, followed by the opening speech by YBhg Dato’ Che Azemi Haron. The first session saw three experts sharing their knowledge on Malaysian Broadband Landscape; YBhg Dato’ Mohd Ali Hanafiah Mohd Yunus, the Chief Officer Industry Development under the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Mr. Jason Lo, Chief Executive Officer of Tune Talk Sdn. Bhd. and Mr. Foong Chee Kheong, Head of Regulatory of DiGi Telecommunications Sdn. Bhd.

The second session in the afternoon featured the topic of Empowering the Consumer. En. Abdul Rahman Samad, from Pertubuhan Pembimbing Kewangan Pengguna & Keluarga Malaysia (KPM) followed by Pn. Rafidah Mat Isa, MCMC’s representative talking about ‘Broadband – How Vulnerable Are We?’ The last speaker for the session was Mr. Ezra Zaid a well-known figure as a social media activist speaking on Nurturing Responsible Netizens and Online Culture.

The event was well received by attendees, and generated positive responses, prompting CFM to step up to another level by hosting a regional Forum next year which will include representatives from the ASEAN countries.
